Proto Labs—a manufacturer of prototypes and on-demand production parts—is helping the UK-based startup company AGI Solutions bring a heated butter knife and ice-cream scoop to market.
AGI Solutions has been formed by Amit Pala, Ghazi Chowdrey and Imtyaz Ali, three friends that decided to create a heated knife after listening to Chowdrey’s father vent his frustration at being unable to spread cold butter on bread.
Pala—a senior applications manager possessing many years’ electro-mechanical design experience in the automotive, aerospace and defense industries—designed the heated knife and its accompanying docking station.
The friends then thought to create a heated ice-cream scoop that uses the same docking station as the knife and heats to the correct temperature for serving ice-cream directly from the freezer.
The knife and scoop, aptly named EasiSpread and EasiScoop, respectively, are detached from a rechargeable handle for cleaning. The handle is placed in the docking station for recharging and the knife or scoop reattached once cleaned, ready to be used again.
EasiSpread has already gained recognition as one of the top 20 products in the British Innovators’ Awards 2015, at the Gadget Show Live, in Birmingham, UK.
Pala submitted his CAD model designs to Proto Labs for manufacturing as functional prototypes. The company used 3D printing technology to produce the knife, scoop and handle designs as proof-of-concept parts in the correct plastics. The production-ready parts have enabled AGI Solutions to carry out ergonomic testing and present the concepts as validated to potential investors.
‘We approached Proto Labs to 3D print our product, as we knew they use quality materials and with the ability to provide a superb, polished finish,’ said Chowdrey. ‘We now have excellent products to take to market, showing exactly what the finished article will look like when it goes into full manufacture.’
EasiSpread has already gained recognition as one of the top 20 products in the British Inventors Project Awards 2015, at the Gadget Show Live, in Birmingham, UK.
AGI Solutions intends to market EasiSpread and EasiScoop through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo. The products have been branded under the umbrella name EasiChef, offering scope for the potential development of further kitchen utensils in the future.
