Insight into the 2017 AMUG Conference provided by Todd Grimm

The Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) Conference is a unique experience in many ways—so much so that calling it a conference is a bit misleading. This year’s event will be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on March 19-23, and it is still possible to register.

Just five years ago, in 2012, attendance stood at 275 attendees. The current projection for 2017 is 1,300+, which is a 23 percent increase over 2016 and 275 percent increase over 2012.

As Steve Deak, the AMUG president, says: ‘It’s an exciting time to be in additive manufacturing. With the pace of technology developments and advancements, users need information. The AMUG Conference is designed to be the conduit for information exchange between additive manufacturing (AM) users as well as a communication channel between users and equipment manufacturers.’

Conference attendance is limited to those who have AM equipment or use desktop 3D printers in a professional environment, which means that all those you talk with will have first-hand experience and insight. To promote the exchange of ideas and building of networks, the AMUG Conference is structured such that technical content is blended with social gatherings. The structure also promotes engagement and interaction from early morning until late in the evening.

Attendees at AMUG gain access to four days of presentations, workshops and hands-on training; and when not in session, they get to roam through the AMUG expo held over two nights. All meals and beverages are provided.

The agenda for the week includes over 200 presentations and as many as 25 concurrent sessions. This lineup includes keynotes from:

As a special treat, the conference will have an on-stage interview of this year’s Innovators Award recipient, Carl Deckard, who is the inventor of Selective Laser Sintering. For a look at the week, see the conference agenda.
